Mediterranean Neighbours » Meeting in Madrid, Spain, January 11th-13th 2008

Attended by Eva, Carmen, Teresa R and Teresa N, Maria-Jose, Pilar, Esperanza from Spain; and Odile, Jacqueline, Michelle, Sophie from France (Paris), Annette(Segré), Geneviève(Bordeaux)

Our Swiss friends couldn’t be present, participating in another meeting at the same time.

French women were particularly grateful towards their Spanish friends for having been so kindly welcomed and appreciated the important contributions they brought in the debates.

On Friday evening, after introducing ourselves, we had first exchanges about the ecumenical dialogue in our countries. On Saturday morning Annette and Odile gave an account, the first one on the European Meeting in Sibiu she attended last September and the second one on the EFECW CN Meeting in Huissen at the same period. The whole group had a walk into the historical centre of Madrid during the afternoon. We enjoyed   the smooth Spanish chocolate we had served in a cafe at Opera square.

When we came back, we spent a long time talking on inter religious dialogue in our countries, mainly between Muslim and Christian women.

On Sunday we had an ecumenical prayer together; then we tried to bring out some conclusions on issues we discussed about during the meeting.

We should like to share some of them with all the EFECW women.

1°About the EFECW itself.

- We have to debate clearly on financial issues.

- We also need to rewrite some rules about the CC and NC elections.

2° About Ecumenical matters

- We urge the EFECW to initiate a common study upon the Charta Oecumenica, as requested in the Sibiu final message.

- We also ask the EFECW to question our Churches upon the way they react in the overall secularization that is changing our societies and what is their actual commitment in ecumenical dialogue. Are they fixed on the past or do they try to have open-minded and sensible visions?

About pluri religious and multi cultural dialogue

We have to apply the third recommendation of the Sibiu final message about inter religious dialogue.

About the relationship between secular world and religion, we should avoid to be focused on the scarf problem and we better should study which rights are legally recognized to the churches in various countries and what could be changed in their public endowment?

We have also to study migrant women’s identity in Europe; what traditions they live with, why do they reject the Western feminism, how they can find their own way  between singularity and  universality, escaping in their communities or getting adapted to foreign customs.

In  the development  of a  more intellectual dialogue between  Muslims  and  Western Europe citizens , we  have always to consider the  place  given to women as criterion of approval or contestation of the proposed terms

The last point refers to The Koran and The Bible; we have to clarify the place given to those Books in the two religions and what kind of reading and interpretation we do practice.
