Tasks: To co-ordinate the work of the CEC in relation to Mission in Europe
I. Main duties:
1. To network and develop relationships alongside research and mapping, accompanied by development of case studies;
2. To perceive and describe challenges and opportunities coming out of the practice of mission in Europe today, reflecting on the task of mission within contemporary European society in all its aspects, including secularisation, post-modernity, multicultural and multireligious developments;
3. To work, as a first priority, on differing understandings and concepts of mission in the churches of Europe today. This will include reflection on such concepts as mission shaped congregations, missional church, mission and spirituality and mission and evangelism. It is expected that out of this, research and case study experiences will be shared through consultations and publications;
4. To reflect creatively on appropriate models of mission for churches, which are engaged ecumenically and in particular address the issue of how to avoid proselytism.
II. Reference Group
A small Reference Group will be set up in order to meet with the Researcher in European Mission in the beginning of his/her work and at least once per year thereafter, to advise the him/her, and receive and comment on the interim reports of the work.
III. In profile, the person being sought will be:
Ø of strong Christian commitment, supported in his/her application by his/her church, and of enthusiasm and with vision for the future Christian witness in Europe:
Ø of ecumenical commitment and awareness of the diversity of church life in Europe;
Ø well-versed in missiological issues, and keen to extend his/her knowledge of mission theology and practice;
Ø of demonstrable ability to carry out research and to report on it;
Ø capable of initiative and hard working;
Ø with appropriate language ability (English is necessary, and at least one other of the CEC working languages: German and French).
